Abraham – A Different Perspective

A  Short Story About Abraham; A Different Perspective

I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, (meaning that it did not belong to them at that time!) all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

God Establishes “an everlasting covenant” with Abram; WHY?

Why would God choose Abram to be the prime source of three religions?
Abram was not a virtuous man. Surely God knew that Abram would:

Have an incestuous marriage to Sarah

Allow his wife Sarah to be raped by in order to save his own skin.

Allow his wife Sarah, to be raped by …. in order to save his own skin.

Torture his son with threats to kill him dead

Why would God choose a man of such amoral character?

Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites

In addition, God told Abram that

Further, because Abram is willing to sacrifice his “only” son in order to demonstrate his “faith”,  God promises Abram  that

I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies”.

To summarize, God promises that the seed of Abraham will possess land from the Nile to the Euphrates conquering all peoples living therein; promises that they will be as many as there are stars in heaven and that they shall possess the gates of their enemies.  And all that his seed has to do to gain these tremendous advantages is to be circumcised and obey his rules. WOW!

Here’s The Question

Doesn’t it strike you as strange that God would make such a covenant with anyone; let alone a lying, conniving, self-serving, child torturer (you think his son wasn’t scared?),  would-be son murderer, son-of-a-bitch  like Abram? On the other hand, doesn’t it sound like a great marketing story if you found yourself with a circumcised penis surrounded by “enemies”?

Circumcision Explained

So Dad, why does my doodle look like a bald headed mouse?

“Why son, you are very special; you will be able to subdue all those who oppose you and take over their lands because you are a seed of Abram and your funny looking doodle is proof of it.

”How’s that for giving your sons (whose sisters, God explains, can be sold as sex objects if money is tight) a warm and fuzzy feeling of superiority!

God’s Promises Didn’t Prevent The Holocaust

Note that God has not done anything that he promised: Jews are having trouble holding on to one one-hundredth of the land God promised, and they are a small minority of the earth’s population. But worse, He stood by as Hitler murdered over six million of Abrams seed.  Didn’t intervene one iota as he did a mere 3500 years ago when he helped subdue the Amorites by throwing down huge hailstones at them:

“they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword”.

What About the Others Who Did Not Bow To Yahweh?

Note that God did nothing to  the Asians, the Australians, those living in the Americas, the Africans, etc. all of whom were worshiping other Gods. They were not punished as were those who happened to occupy the land that God promised to Abram’s seed. We think it’s because the authors of Genesis didn’t even know about those lands, even though all books of the Bible are supposed to be inspired/written/directed/dictated/whatever by God Himself. How can it be that there were infidels all over the globe, and yet God only slaughtered those who happened to live in the vicinity of the children of Israel?

 Rational Conclusion

God has not been heard from since that short period of time around 3500 years ago when He was chitty-chatty with just about everyone named in the Old Testament. Some think he may be dead. Some don’t even believe there is a God. They even use the broken promises and silence during the Holocaust as evidence that there is no god. Count us among those who believe there is no God.

  1. Aje olokun says:

Hi just to correct both Dan and Toms error the OP wrote that Abraham had an incestous marriage to sarah : he is correct cos the Bible tells us in the narrative that Sarah is Abram’s sister ( unless of course sister in this instance would mean something else other than what we know it to be)

Now those who read the Bible literarily should beware , the stories of the Bible are metaphors they are not to be taken as actual events .
I am one those , who think more than half of the world’s problem will go away once religious people can learn how to interpret correctly the metaphors of their so called holy books

    peace, prosperity & gratitude

  2. Dan says:

“Have sex with each of his daughters under the pretense of being drunk (but not so drunk he couldn’t perform!)”

–You’re thinking of Lot, not Abraham. You might want to fix that.

    • Thanks for the “heads-up”; but I am correct.
      Genesis 22:1-2:
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

But it doesn’t matter. It’s all nonsense anyway.
