God is Neither Omniscient Nor Omnipotent

Epicurus Sums It Up Quite Well

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

God Is Not Omniscient

There Are Times in the Bible When God Doesn’t Know All, and Tests People to Find Things Out

The Bible says God is perfect in knowledge, knows all thoughts, all secrets, sees all and no-one can hide from God. See: 1 Samuel 2:3, Job 28:24; 37:16; 42:2, Psalm 44:21; 139:4,7-8; 147:5, Proverbs 15:3, Jeremiah 16:17, 23:24, Acts 1:24, Hebrews 4:13, Matthew 10:30 and 1 John 3:19-20. Yet there are times when God doesn’t know things, such as where people are. Check these verses:

  • Genesis 3:8-13 – Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord, amongst the trees of the garden, and God had to go find them, and then asks them questions.
  • Genesis 11:4 -9 – Tower of Babel;: God “comes down” to see what the people are up to.
  • Genesis 6:6 – And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. An omniscient LORD would have no reason to repent for he would have known in advance how his creations would turn out.
  • Genesis 18:20-21 – “Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous 21that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.””
  • Genesis 32:22-30 – In this obscure story, Jacob wrestles with God in bodily form and sees God face-to-face. God asks Jacob what Jacob’s name is; yet an all-knowing god would know
  • Numbers 22:9 – Balaam and some Moabite officials spend a night waiting for God, who duly pops down for a visit, “And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?” An all-knowing God would have known.
  • Job 1:7, 2:2 – “And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, from going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”
  • Hosea 8:4 – Some princes of Israel were set up without God’s knowledge.

Sometimes, it is said in the Bible that God tests people. In Deuteronomy 8:1-2 God reveals that the 40-years in the wilderness was a test done by God to find out what was in people’s hearts – whether they would still obey orders.

In Deuteronomy 13:1-5 God sends some false prophets and wonder-workers as tests to see if people will follow other gods, and in 2 Chronicles 32:31 God is doing similar fact-finding tests.

Yet an all-knowing God, creator of all time, knows exactly who will pass any tests, and knows exactly what is in everyone’s heart. So either God is lying about his reasons, or, god is not actually all-knowing. See: God Never Needs to Test Us” by Vexen Crabtree (2005).

Tower of Babel Story Proves Once More That God is Not Omniscient

Genesis

11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
11:5
And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
11:8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
11:9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

This passage demonstrates two instances of the Bible’s errors

1. The supposedly omniscient God did not know humans were incapable of building a tower “whose top may reach unto heaven.”
2. The supposedly omniscient God did not KNOW that there were already multiple languages.
By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations. Genesis 10:5
God must have forgotten about this verse.

According to the above verses, God believed that these people could actually build a tower “whose top may reach unto heaven.”

In science, before a hypothesis can be accepted as true, it must be falsifiable. That is, there must be something, which, if found, would prove the hypothesis to be false. The hypothesis that “God is omniscient” is falsified with this passage. God did not know that humans were unable to reach heaven no matter how tall a tower they built.

In addition, this passage contains another example of God’s lack of knowledge.

And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower…

If God were omniscient, he wouldn’t have to “come down to see” . He would know, without having to “come down”, what the people were doing and what their intentions were.

Multiple Language  – Internal Inconsistency and Erroneous History

In this chapter we learn that languages were created and people dispersed during the time of Babel.

11:9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

But just one chapter earlier, we are told that Noah’s sons actually divided the people into their nations along with creating their own tongues.

Genesis 10:5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

Linguistics is the scientific study of how languages develop. No linguist believes that different languages originated with the dispersion of Noah’s sons or the dispersion of the peoples of Babel. Both stories are fables.

God is Not Omnipotent

 Wrestling

God loses a wrestling match with Jacob even though God strikes Jacob in his testicles. Gen 32:24-30

Wheels of Iron

And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. Judges 1:19

Could Not Convince People That He Is God

Jesus is rejected by those who knew him the best, the people from his home town of Nazareth.

“They were offended at him … and he could do there no mighty work.”  Mark 6:3-5

Forgive Those Who Reject You

And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. Mark 6:11

The Point Is…

Man Created God in His Own Image

The God of the Bible is very much the product of the imagination of an ignorant people. He has all the human desires and foibles. He is jealous, angry, capricious, impatient , wrathful, ad nauseum. His knowledge of science exceedith not that of a primitive, ignorant man. His use of weaponry (he throws stones at enemies) is the same as that of primitive, ignorant man. He lacks compassion for those who do not idolize and worship him.  In short, there is nothing tangible to set the biblical god apart from the state of humanity at the time of the writing of the bible.

As shown below, he is anything but omniscient and omnipotent.  Evidence for his powers consists only of written assertions by these ancient, ignorant people attesting to his power. Yet, because these writers were, in many cases, unaware of what others had written, they include assertions that totally contradict one another.  Using these contradictions, it is easy to prove that God is not omniscient, nor is he omnipotent.

These stories are nonsense written by unknown people to explain things they, in their total ignorance of almost everything, could not understand. These stories could not have been authored by an omniscient God. We take nonsense stories like this as evidence that the Bible is false and should not be used as a Holy, divine document.

Biblical God is not a deity. The hebrew word ĕlōhīm identifies a moltitude of individuals, often accompained by their first name, each time. Biblical ĕlōhīm were people in the flesh, concrete, earthly. There’s nothing divine behind them. They were no omniscient nor omnipotent, their power over earthlings comes from a superior technology and a greater knowledge.

Biblical narrative is extremely consistent with the hypothesis that the ĕlōhīm were a delegation of a civilization which origin is, probably, outside this planet.

  2. pilgrimkid says:

The truth is, God is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. However, it must be understood that the beings that the Old Testament referred to as god is not the true God. These were beings that were actually from other planets. They were very advanced in technology. They were responsible for structures such as the great pyramids. They really walked earth and because of their more advanced intelligence and technologies, they were considered to be gods. That’s why you often see term like “let us”. This shows that there were multiple of those beings regarded as gods. So they must not be confused with the true God which has no name and no human personality.

Where TF are you getting this info and why do you believe it and how do you know you’re not just an insane person??

  3. Hamman says:

This article was going great till the ending paragraph. At that point, it seems like the author just feels he’s so much smarter than the ancient peasants. That’s laughable. Modern man wouldn’t survive a day in the ancient wild. All we know is because someone else has taught us, the average person is as dumb as a caveman. If humanity has to rebuild itself after some catastrophe, how many folks could actually recreate medicines, or computers, or even paper? We rely on the small number of elites to guide us. Reading blogs and books gives us head knowledge, that’s not the only way to measure intelligence. How about coming at this from a state of being humble? You’d see that the ancient writings may actually contain something learnable. They may even be exaggerated accounts of something special that’s lost to humanity’s collective knowledge.

  4. Truth Hurts says:

Summary of God’s incompetence at Babel: God feared a not-very-tall building made of rock and mud, so he spread out the population and scrambled their languages. Well God? How did that work out? Buildings are now everywhere on the globe and are MANY TIMES TALLER than that stupid Babel tower, and they are crafted from advanced materials. Engineers from all over the world, speaking many different languages, collaborate every day on building amazing structures. God is dumber than a farmer, upon finding an ant hill in his field, that decides to spread the ants out all over the field…then the farmer is surprised when he returns later and finds many ant hills covering his entire field. Omniscient? Nope, Yahweh is an omnidiot.

  5. Charlie says:

If God were all knowing as many might assume, then the course of humanity would be fixed and there would be no need for creation. He would know who would be in heaven and who would go to hell before any action was taken. He would know how evil would become prevalent and yet proceed in spite of knowing the outcome.

All knowledge and all power is the fact that God knows how to create worlds, create people and offer an eternal salvation to them by allowing us to have agency, that is sufficient freedom to act and based on our capacity to know good and evil. We then become accountable for our actions and they determine our course.

    • TruthSayer says:

Your dismissal of the standard repertoire or Gods powers, e.g. omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent among several others with “as many might assume”, doesn’t work for most Christians. Your simple explanation doesn’t acknowledge the accepted concept of God as being omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent potent, etc, etc, etc.

Please explain how free will, God’s will and prayer play into this exquisite interpretation of Gods powers.

  6. Al says:

You really understand God far far less than you believe.

  7. Terry says:

We could help show more people what the Bible really is if we could show who really wrote it and it’s not inspired by God. Do you have any videos or articles proving it’s not inspired?

    • Thomas L Kieft says:

You are the one claiming the Bible is the inspired word of God. That is an extraordinary claim. The burden of proof is upon YOU to prove the extraordinary claim. Simple example: Do you have any videos or articles proving that the Flying Spaghetti Monster is not the one true God?

  8. Steve K. says:

True. God, if God exists, is neither all-knowing or all-powerful. Human history proves that. No.miracles. Prayers unanswered. The Bible was written by ancient and primitive men fearful of a God with purely human characteristics; man made God in his image. The Greeks were light years ahead of the men (and I assume it was all men) who wrote the Bible.

  9. Alexander Desilets says:

Have you ever considered the idea that the religious put god on a pedestal?

God is omnipotent in the sense that he is infinitely powerful and has the ability to use that power in complex ways.

God is “omniscient” in that he understands how everything works on a fundamental scientific level.

But God is not truly omniscient, nor is he clairvoyant. He was also spoiled and childish in the early stages, being an impatient tyrant who didn’t like it when his things didn’t do what he wanted and since of his other things messed with his experiment once and he had to flood the planet to try to restart.

Devout religious people have a comically unidimensional view of god. They have zero understanding of what it must have been like to have been alone for eternity, then to have made Angels who followed every command and whim for an eternity, then make man who didn’t have to listen and had free will.

It was a learning curve and no one had compassion for the divine.

  15. Ron says:

Your understanding of THE LIVING GOD is not only limited but terribly troubling that a created being like yourself would dare lifting up his voice against his CREATOR. It’s futile exercise to argue or reason with u on this matter.2Cor.3-5,14; 2Cor.4:4; 1Jn2:11

    • Draca Rose says:

The fact that you feel like Just because you were created means you Deserve to give all fealty to said creator denotes your utter fear of said creator. You sir are the one trapped in the darkness, the darkness of your own heart.

  16. John Wyndam says:

It’s funny how God is described in the Bible to be so flawed. Surely the Bible’s description is not a good as an actual God would be.

  17. Andre says:

Great post! The part where you point out that God thought man could actually build a tower that would reach heaven is genius! And to think of all the problems in the world he should have been worrying about back then, and yet, all he was concerned with was that men would find out where he lived. What a joke!

  18. Mark T says:

Are you saying man for many generations is so stupid to believe the Word of God to make it the best selling book, in the most languages?

There is a complex code withing first five books of the Word. Codes come from intelligent minds. This code found in the Word of God is verified by top secular scientists.

How do you argue against what you don’t really understand, nor believe in?…the Word of God?

    • Stephen D. says:

Humans (as a matter of fact) find patterns everywhere; whether they were intentional or not. Don’t believe me, attend a poetry class, and write the most absurd, meaningless poem, which someone (or multiple people) will connect with and tell you how deep your poem was. Biblical codes are another example of this. They were written by bronze-age nomads, mistranslated, and put into a language that you understand. How many doomsday predictions have been pulled from this biblical code, only to require recalculation, when the event doesn’t happen? The reason the bible persists is because parents pass the tradition on to their children.

    • Charles McAdams says:

Does anyone know these codes and are you saying that since these codes exist that the Bible cannot be interpreted literally?

    • Andrew Rogers says:

It’s the “best selling” because churches but a bunch of them and try to convert ppl, it’s not like individuals go to the bookstore to buy them so much, and also Christian armies used to force other nations to convert under threat of death if you ever look into some real history to learn something…..
