Joshua, the Lord’s Killing Machine

Near as I can tell, the ONLY reason for the slaughter of the people of Jericho was the fact that they occupied the land that the fucking “lord” had promised to the fucking Jews.

God again promises great things for the jews in Joshua…

1:4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

1:5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

1:6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

So what do you call the extermination of six million jews?

Next follows a ridiculous sequence re Jerico

6:3 And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.

6:4 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams’ horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

6:5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat., and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

Low and behold, the walls fall down and …

6:21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

Because they had the misfortune to occupy land that fucking god had promised the fucking jews.

6:24 And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.

6:26 Cursed be the man … that … buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn.”

Joshua says that those who try to rebuild Jericho will be accursed by God, and will have to sacrifice both their oldest and their youngest sons in its construction. Well, Jericho still exists today, and is often considered to be the world’s oldest, continuously occupied city.

Well… I did just learn about the city of Ai. Once again innocent citizens, who had no quarel with the fucking jews, were slaughtered because God promised them their land.

8:8 And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.

8:25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

8:26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

NEXT… non-Isrealites are made to be slaves forever… because they are not fucking jews

9:17 And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim

9:23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God

Next, should you rightly fear mighty Joshua (wonder how he would do if god weren’t helping him?) and try to counterattack, you are doomed.

 10:1 Now it came to pass, when Adonizedec king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

10:5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

10:10 And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

10:11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

This is really good – god causes the “sun to stand still” so Joshua can get everyone killed in one day.

10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day

So, any of the jews enemies will be annihilated by god – NOT!

10:25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

Even if you don’t want to fight the jews, it doesn’t matter because God makes people want to fight the Jews,

11:20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly.” 11:20

Then he sets them up for Joshua –

10:19 And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.

Then the fucking god joins in the fray

10:11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

Now how can this be since the Isrealis had already “utterly destroyed all that was in the city”?

Here’s the truth…

Modern scholars believe that Joshua is the work of writers from the 8th and 7th centuries BC, with retouchings from the exilic period. In terms of composition it forms a continuation of the JE version of the torah, and thus two of the main spliced-together narrative sources within it – Jahwist (J), and Elohist (E) – or at least deriving from sources from the same schools of thought as these. They see it as a theological polemic, with the majority of events invented during or after the Babylonian captivity, to encourage faithfulness to the Jewish creed at a time when it was being threatened.

The archaeological evidence tends to disprove the historical reliability of the Book of Joshua. A large body of archaeologists believe that the Israelites were simply an emergent subculture within Canaanite society – i.e. that an Israelite conquest would be a logical nonsense – it would have involved the Canaanites invading themselves, from Canaan.
